UberEats driver left customer a drawing after receiving $10 tip — the reason is heart-melting

The tipping culture is widely practiced for delivery drivers, among others in the service sector. A user who goes by u/alexm1124 on Reddit revealed that they decided to tip an UberEats delivery person $10 out of courtesy. They were stunned to find a drawing on their door, secretly left by the driver as a token of gratitude for the tip. Although it wasn’t a big amount, the driver had scribbled his special reason to be happy about the $10. His simplicity and thoughtfulness have the internet feeling emotional. According to Virginia Tech, there are currently around 4 million workers for whom tips are a major financial relief.

Sheryl Ball, who studies behavioral economics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, noted that tipping is often done to reward and appreciate a worker’s service or in hopes of a better future for the worker. “In behavioral economics, we like to think of this as reciprocity. Someone does a good job of taking care of you when you go to a restaurant or ride in a taxi cab, so you want to reward them for their good work,” she explained. In this customer’s case, they were appreciative of the delivery driver’s work and wanted to reward him.

In a comment, it was revealed that the customer had requested the delivery of some wine and gave the driver $10 at their door. They had gone back inside to fetch some ID, and it is presumed that the driver quickly sketched the drawing during that window. It was a small card with abstract art that left many curious about its meaning. Luckily, the man also left a note behind the drawing. “The drawing is gratitude for tips that help me get closer to my dream startup," he wrote.

According to Statistics by EMBROKER, many, like the delivery guy, are out there hustling, trying to save up for startups. The average cost for payroll in a startup is around $300,500 for five employees across the U.S., according to data from SmartAsset. Equipment costs for startups are anywhere between $10,000 to $125,000, according to Nerdwallet. There are so many additional costs and factors that go into making a startup dream a reality. However, this delivery man had the humility to appreciate the littlest effort from his customer’s end and thank them for their tip.

In another comment, the customer revealed that they were moved by the gesture but were all the more amazed by the art. “I wish I could draw like that,” they wrote. u/hellgal wrote, “That is a really cool sketch. Best of luck to the delivery guy.” u/bb3224 remarked, “That’s the dopest shit right there! My dream life was partially funded by doing gig work on the side of my job at the time and people who tipped really made a difference. Hope he makes it all happen!” u/Eiffeltower777 added, ‘Gratitude for a tip, what a concept!” u/IamShieldMaiden noted, “I wish him well. And I thank you for your generous heart. It makes more difference than you know.”
