Woman became violently ill on an 11-hour flight and was taken off in a wheelchair — her boyfriend’s response stunned the passenger helping her
People often say you truly get to know someone during difficult moments because grand romantic gestures may leave lasting memories, but it is the quiet choices made when nobody is watching that reveal how much a person genuinely cares. That was the experience shared by Instagram user Emily Grosser, who goes by @emilygrosser99, in a video uploaded on May 2, 2026. During an 11-hour international flight, the woman seated beside her suddenly became seriously ill, prompting the cabin crew to step in. What Grosser witnessed from the stranger's partner traveling with her, however, left an even greater impression.
As the young woman spent hours battling severe vomiting and stomach pain near the galley, her boyfriend barely reacted. While flight attendants monitored her condition and Grosser herself repeatedly helped her, offering anti-nausea medication, electrolyte sachets, and even bringing over her blanket, he remained in his seat playing his Nintendo Switch. In fact, the creator even offered to swap seats so he could sit closer to his partner and visit her more easily, but he declined, despite never checking on her. The worst came when the flight landed, and the woman had to be taken off in a wheelchair; he still did not help gather her belongings, leaving Grosser to retrieve them instead.
According to Grosser, the flight attendants suspected the passenger was suffering from severe gastroenteritis and had already run out of anti-nausea medication by the time she offered supplies from her own travel medical kit. She even tried to give the boyfriend the benefit of the doubt, wondering whether his sick partner had asked for space or preferred to manage the situation alone. Yet each passing hour made that explanation increasingly difficult to believe, to the point that the creator questioned the relationship altogether.
After all, care is rarely measured by the words people say when life is easy. It is revealed by the choices they make when someone beside them needs them most. Viewers were equally flabbergasted. @cathypoggle said, "I really hope she leaves him when she’s recovered." Meanwhile, @katjerry commented, "Having a boyfriend is a humiliation ritual at this point." @blondee_shipwreck wrote, "May this love never find me."
Sequoia Counseling Center has laid out a few suggestions for people dealing with a sick spouse. Supporting a sick partner means putting their needs first, even if you are frustrated or have unresolved disagreements. Being patient, helping with their responsibilities, spending time with them, and bringing them comforting food or drinks can make them feel cared for while they recover. Most importantly, consistent support matters, especially if they deal with illness frequently, because no one chooses to be sick.
