Woman’s first Hinge date ordered food she didn’t want and left it untouched — what the waitress revealed outside made her cancel her next date

What started as an awkward first date ended with a surprise that convinced Margot to delete Hinge.

Dating apps can make it hard to know what someone will be like until you're sitting across from them. For Margot, that first meeting was enough to make her question whether she wanted to try online dating again. Margot Lee, who posts on TikTok as @margot.lee, shared her experience on August 4, 2026, after a disastrous first Hinge date left her canceling another date scheduled for the following night.

Margot shared that she went on her very first date with a guy she met on Hinge, and it had already started to feel uncomfortable. The biggest shock came outside the restaurant when the waitress told Margot she may have forgotten to sign. She then realized he had left no tip. Given his earlier complaints that the restaurant had “hustled us,” she suspected it was intentional. His Uber arrived soon after, and he left without waiting for hers. “That was the worst part of the whole day,” Margot said.

The awkward interaction had begun when Margot texted her date to say she was running five minutes late. She expected him to already be waiting at the restaurant, but he replied that he was running five minutes late, too. Margot said there had already been plenty of red flags. As soon as he came, he looked her up and down when they met, spent several minutes on his phone during dinner, barely contributed to the conversation, and didn't ask much about her. He also complained about the food, barely ate anything despite making the dinner reservation, and told her that one of the dishes probably contained "3,000 calories."

Margot said she was left trying to keep the conversation alive while also feeling increasingly uncomfortable. By the next morning, she decided she’d had enough. As someone who values personality, she said she wanted to quickly know whether she truly connected with someone. She decided to delete the dating app and joked that she'd rather hand out acquaintance cards instead.

Viewers in the comments were also stunned by how her date was a turnoff. @chaotic.yet.zen reacted to the missing tip, writing, "He didn’t leave a tip? Disgusting." Another commenter, @itsjuanitoooooo, joked, "As a gay man, I would love to start taking girls on dates just for them to avoid this treatment."  While @zoid1706 agreed, saying, "A big red flag." First dates do not always go as expected. A similar dating-app experience ended even worse. A woman on Reddit shared her first date experience after a five-year relationship. She matched with a man on Hinge who seemed like a gentleman, only for him to disappear during dinner and leave her with the bill. The manager eventually let her pay only for her meal, but the experience left her so upset that she swore off dating apps.
