Man on vacation thought his dog was safe at daycare—then a Ring doorbell alert stopped him in his tracks

When it comes to dogs, nothing beats their loyalty and love. They can be the most clingy creatures with a reassuring warmth. Jeremy and Sarah Henson were happy to have their dog, Dexter, as a part of their family, PEOPLE reported. However, when they had to go on vacation, they decided to leave the canine in the safe hands of a doggy daycare. Trusting their service and hoping their furry pal would be a good boy, they set out on their five-day vacation miles away from home. All was going well until they received a notification from their Ring camera that left them jaw-dropped.

The couple planned a five-day vacation and sent Dexter to the doggy daycare he usually goes to. Three days into their trip, the man received a notification from their Ring camera about someone being at the front door. The sight was an unthinkable one. “We were both like, ‘Oh my gosh! That's Dexter!” Jeremy recalled, per Inside Edition. Visible in the footage was frantic little Dexter, ringing the doorbell repeatedly, wondering why no one had taken him in. “He didn't understand the fact that we were gone. He just thought we were home,” the man explained. It was later revealed that the canine must have gotten super homesick and made a run.

The baffling part is that there was a six-foot fence surrounding the daycare and a two-mile distance from the daycare to the Hensons. Nevertheless, the determined canine braved through it all and made his way home. The dog was restless, trying to figure out where his pet parents were. Jeremy quickly used the Ring camera voice feature to calm his pet down. “Hi buddy, good boy! Stay there. Oh, I know, buddy, I'm sorry,” he sweetly told Dexter through the camera. Eventually, they contacted the daycare to come get him again until they returned from their trip and got him home. Looking back on the event, the pet parents aren’t sure how to feel. It did give them a sense of pride that their canine loved them and wanted to check on them when they didn’t show up for three days.

"We adopted Dexter to be a watchdog for my wife while I traveled and he takes that job very seriously, so that's probably why he was so determined to come home," Jeremy explained. He credited the camera feature for being able to witness the situation and also help calm Dexter in what was a frantic and scary day for him. "Previously, it made me feel safe knowing that whenever anyone came to our doorstep, we would be notified of it. But now, I truly believe that the Ring Doorbell saved my dog's life,” he said. He noted how simply knowing that Dexter was there helped them get him to a safe, warm place in due time and not leave him stranded or in confusion. Speaking of his canine’s nature, he mentioned that he wasn't too shocked by Dexter’s skillful escape. “He's very smart and intelligent. It can get him into trouble sometimes,” he remarked.
