Trash truck driver was about to empty dumpster—then a startling sight in garbage made him get out of the truck immediately

Sometimes, a person might end up saving a life at the most unexpected moment. So when a trash truck driver was about to empty a dumpster, he had no idea that he would end up rescuing a dog the very next moment. The man, Jermaine Jackson, saw the dog pop out at just the right moment before his next move could have severely injured the dog. Once he noticed her, he immediately got out to help her out of the trash, per WTVR.

Jackson was going to empty a dumpster in Old Towne Petersburg back in 2021 when he saw the dog inside the trash. "As I pulled up to the can and went to dump it, a dog popped out," the man recounted. He was quite shocked to see that, as he didn't think that the dog got inside the dumpster herself. Jackson had worked in waste management for over 26 years and was surprised that someone would do such a thing. He was shaken because the man had already lifted the dumpster and was just ready to empty it out. "It's kind of sad because she's sitting there with a sad face like get me out of here. If I didn't see her, she'd be in the back of the truck right now, or she could have gotten crushed."

Jackson lowered the dumpster and checked on the dog. He found out if she was friendly or not before he freed her. The dog immediately started wagging her tail after she got out. The driver built a makeshift shelter for the dog and called animal control. Jackson waited right there while it rained heavily. Animal control was not open at that time, so he ended up taking the dog to a woman, Frances Verschuure's, front porch instead. "We got some blankets, we got some food, we got some water and we called animal control. So in the meantime, we just sat out here with her. She was as sweet as she could be," the woman pointed out.
Eventually, animal control arrived at the spot to check on the dog. "They did say she was full of milk and recently had puppies. We were glad to get her to another home. Animal control was as gentle and kind as they could be and I hope she finds a good home!" Verschuure remarked. She revealed that the dog had a great attitude. "She just got a great attitude, she just smiled like, 'Thank you, thank you for getting me out of here.'" Jackson was glad that he could help the dog and save her life that day. He believed that someone threw her in the dumpster because she was too short to climb up herself.
"I think somebody threw her in there because where the dock is, she's too short to jump on that dock," Jackson suggested. He was upset that the person didn't look for a better solution if they couldn't care for the dog, instead of throwing her in the trash. The man who owned two dogs himself couldn't ever think of doing such a thing. He believed that many people would be willing to take care of an animal in need. "I got two dogs of my own and I could never think about throwing them in the trash can just because I couldn't take care of them. You wouldn't want anybody to throw you in the trash can if they couldn't take care of you."
