Woman lost husband of 50 years in hit-and-run case—before the verdict, her one simple act for the accused baffled the courtroom

To lose a loved one to an accident or through no fault of their own is beyond heartbreaking. Being hit with a sudden, brutal loss brings in feelings of anger and sorrow more than anything else. A report from PEOPLE revealed that an elderly woman named Regina Johnson lost her husband of 50 years, Chuck Johnson, due to a hit-and-run. The accused, Joseph Tillman, struck him with his electric bike and appeared before the court for a sentence to be delivered. Out of all things a person would want to say or do to the one who took away their everything, Regina’s action was an unexpected one. Before the verdict was announced, she made a gesture that left everyone shocked.

Regina and Chuck had been together for 50 years before she lost him to an accident. The 78-year–old was killed when Tillman was driving his electric bike under the influence of nitrous oxide, as reported by WSB-TV. The family was shattered to hear of the loss of their beloved. Brittany McCarthy, Chuck’s daughter, noted, “I will be the daughter whose heart you shattered, a life you forever changed because of your choice to do drugs while driving. You became a deadly weapon and my father paid the price with his life.” One can expect their feelings of pain, anger, grief and so much more to evolve. However, when she appeared in the courtroom, she had something else to say.

Tillman pleaded guilty and before the judge could announce a 20-year imprisonment for the young man, Regina did something unbelievable — she went and hugged him. The woman revealed that God was pushing her to give him a hug, that he needed a “mom hug.” Despite hurting and being heartbroken, she made a powerful decision: she forgave Tillman. “Joey doesn’t know yet how much God loves him,” she said, expressing her forgiveness. As the duo shared a long, poignant embrace, the young man realized the depth of his mistake and pleaded sorrowfully. “Joey needs healing of things in his past, as we all do. And that is our heart and prayer,” the bereaved woman said.

“I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry,” the accused replied, trying hard to find the words to respond. The tearful gesture left the courtroom shocked. One can’t imagine the strength it must have taken for the wife to put aside her gut-wrenching pain and hug the man who took away the love of her life. But she did it, and she did it beautifully. The Cherokee County Superior Court Judge, Tony Baker, too, was shocked at the sight. He said, “Don’t think I’ve ever seen the wife of the victim hug a defendant where they killed somebody.” Regina learned that Tillman was trying to change and that he was truly sorrowful and she chose to give him that chance.

“He’s changed his way of life and seems like he’s on a trajectory to continue to move forward with his life in a positive way,” Tillman’s defense lawyer, Paul Ghanouni, said. The young man’s sentence was changed to a 24-month rehab. “The minute you flunk out, you’re going to go to prison,” the judge warned him. But the effect of forgiveness is real. “I’ve committed to the long road of making amends. I’ve entered rehab, embraced sobriety and begun the hard, humbling work of healing. I know I do not deserve peace when I’ve caused so much pain,” Tillman said.
