Pastor asked his girlfriend to fill out multiple compatibility surveys throughout dating — until one question 3.5 years later made her heart stop
Love stories don’t always start in cozy cafes or beautiful gardens; sometimes, you meet the love of your life in the most unexpected places. A pastor, Graham McCarthy’s love story started with a funeral no one saw coming. The Vancouver-based pastor was leading an unusual funeral service when he first met his partner, Katrina Froese. She was introduced to McCarthy when he was “officiating a fish funeral,” as a friend of a friend. A connection was made, and the chords were struck. Not just the place of meeting, but also their date was unique, reported CTV News on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. McCarthy asked her out, and she agreed, but the invitation came with a twist: a Google form. Froese (@maytheeleven) shared the survey on TikTok on November 8, 2021, never expecting what would happen next. The video went viral and received over 10 million views, but with this, it marked the start of their beautiful relationship.

“It was fun that he showed up, and he did the whole eulogy,” Froese shared. “And I’m like, alright, I can get behind this,” she added. Unlike others, McCarthy did not send a casual text. Instead, he sent a survey asking about her preferences for their first date. Froese thought it was some joke, but soon she realized it wasn’t. “He really wanted me to answer the questions. So, I was like, OK, I guess this is real.” The survey mostly had multiple-choice questions, covering everything from her food choices to how dressed she wanted to be, with options from “basically pajamas” to “a dress, suit, and tie.”
The questionnaire had everything. McCarthy explained that he wanted to ask her a lot of questions, but did not want to send multiple texts. He hoped the survey would come as lighthearted. After their dinner-and-movie date, followed by a post-date survey, Froese agreed it worked.
After 3.5 years of dating, McCarthy once again used his old ways, but this time during a hike. He asked Froese to fill out another form. “Basically, a survey of how he’s been doing in our relationship,” Froese shared. This time, it had another twist. After answering each question positively, she reached the final one: “Will you marry me?” According to the outlet, a video of the proposal showed Froese answering “Yes” again and again. They got married a few months after their engagement. Talking about the ceremony, Froese said, “It was awesome. Super sweet.”

“Don’t seek your needs. Seek the other person’s needs,” McCarthy said. “And if you both do that, everybody’s needs will be met.” Not only Froese, but even the viewers loved McCarthy's signature approach. “The fact that he includes the casualness of the clothes is what’s selling it for me. I’d hate not knowing how to dress,” wrote @kingmalice_. “Dude may not have a car, but he does have game,” commented @swordsage9023. @klbirb84 mentioned, “The Lord really does bless some women.”
